Jefferson City Islamic Center Reaches Out To Community

Posted: May 1, 2012 3:03 PM by Sebastian Martinez Updated: May 2, 2012 12:36 PM JEFFERSON CITY – The Muslim community in Jefferson City is holding an open house and question and answer session Tuesday night at the Jefferson City Muslim Community Center, or Masjid. The session will focus on dispelling myths about Sharia, or Islamic Law, as well as women in Islam. The community center hosted a similar open house last year that drew more than 200 people. With Tuesday’s open house, the Jefferson City Muslim Community (JCMC) aims to clarify Islamic law.

JCMC president Noaman Kayani expressed concern about two Missouri bills introduced last year, one in the House and one in the Senate, which aim to outlaw Sharia in Missouri courts. Kayani said, “We believe that the anti-Sharia bill is against the Constitution. U.S. Constitution allows us to practice our religion.” The JCMC invited state representatives and senators, and 20 have confirmed that they will attend.

Although the JCMC has been around since 1991, the organization moved into the current Mosque on Moreau on the city’s south side four years ago. Kayani said the center serves as a focal point for the Muslim community in Jefferson City. “They always look for the Masjid or Islamic center.” The center plans to hold more open house events in the future.

Open House: Clarifying the Myths Surrounding Shariah (Islamic Law)

Jefferson City Muslim Community (JCMC) cordially invites you to its open house on Tuesday May 1, 2012 from 6am to 9pm. This year, the theme of our open house is, “Clarifying the Myths Surrounding Shariah (Islamic Law)”. This subject has been misunderstood and notoriously misinterpreted in the media. Thus, there will be presentations on different topics such as what is Islam, status of women in Islam, understanding the Shariah, followed by Q&A.

Please come at your convenience and attend a 15-20 minute presentation at mid hour (6:30pm, 7:30pm and 8:30pm) followed by Q&A, a quick tour of our center and enjoy authentic food from various Muslim countries. We will also have scholars and knowledgeable people to help answer your questions.

Words of Thanks

On behalf of the youth and adults who visited the Mosque yesterday, I want to thank you for your wonderful hospitality.  We appreciate your willingness to allow us to come and visit the Mosque, and the wealth of information you presented to us about the Islamic faith.  We believe firmly that the more we know about the faith of others, the more we can grow in understanding and respect.  Our two faiths have much in common, and where we are different, there is need for respect.

I look forward to seeing you again, and to continuing our relationship in the future.

With deepest respect,

Pastor Dave Henry
