Unfortunately, many false accusations and stories are being spread about STLHalal. We would like to take this opportunity to present the objective facts.
April 9th – Mideast Market completed the initial application for review, stating that Crescent Chicken was their exclusive supplier for poultry.
May 25th – Mideast Market received their Certification and signed their contract granting full disclosure concerning their suppliers as well as full inspection rights.
July 23rd – Two STLHalal inspectors discovered discarded boxes of non-Certified poultry products from Golden Rod and Tyson. The total amount was calculated to 860 lbs. Mideast Market was informed of these findings and asked to provide an explanation. No statement to the public was made by STLHalal at that time.
July 30th – Mideast Market stated that the Tyson chicken was purchased by a single employee for their private consumption. An explanation for the Golden Rod chicken was not provided.
July 31st – STLHalal Certification for Mideast Market was suspended.
August 2nd – Four STLHalal representatives met with the President of Mideast Market. At this meeting, the President stated that all 14 boxes (Tyson and Golden Rod) were purchased by an employee for private consumption. This employee was present at the meeting and confirmed that he had purchased all the non-Certified poultry for a single private event. Upon inquiry, neither the employee nor Mideast Market were able to provide: 1) a receipt of the purchase, 2) the contact information of the distributor, or 3) the name of the distributor.
August 9th – Upon an independent investigation, STLHalal discovered that Kuna Foods was the supplier that had provided these products. Kuna Foods informed us that Mideast Market instructed it not to release any information to STLHalal.
August 14th – Three STLHalal representatives met with the President of Mideast Market along with Brother Adil Imdad, who served as an independent mediator. At that time, the President of Mideast Market indicated the following:
-Mideast Market purchased the non-Certified products and fabricated the story about the worker.
-Mideast Market had been purchasing these products prior to applying for Certification; however, they purposely did not include them on their list of suppliers.
-Mideast Market’s President indicated that the Golden Rod chicken was purchased exclusively for two restaurants: Kabob Palace and a restaurant that prefers not to be named. Furthermore, Mideast Market stated that these two restaurants knew they weren’t purchasing authentic Halal chicken.
-Mideast Market authorized STLHalal representatives to verify that Mideast Market sold Golden Rod chicken to other restaurants. STLHalal representatives informed the president of Mideast Market that the suspension of Mideast Market’s certification could be lifted if a satisfactory and accurate explanation could be provided.
-STLHalal contacted the restaurant that shall remain unnamed and they stated that they had only purchased Crescent Chicken from Mideast Market. They showed members of STLHalal the contents of their cooler which only contained boxes of Crescent Chicken.
-STLHalal contacted Kabob Palace and they stated that they had never purchased any poultry from Mideast Market. The second restaurant stated that they exclusively purchased Crescent chicken (whole boxes with the label intact) from Mideast Market. STLHalal received a phone call from Mideast Market after attempting to confirm these reports. STLHalal informed Mideast Market that no restaurant confirmed that they had been ordering 700 pounds of Golden Rod chicken from Mideast Market.
August 15th – STLHalal proposed a private mediation between Mideast Market and STLHalal through an attorney. The President of Mideast Market refused and explicitly stated he will not mediate with either the President, Vice President, or Director of Publicity of STLHalal.
After learning about Mideast Market’s “Letter to the Community,” STLHalal contacted Mideast Market on August 29th, and proposed holding a public hearing in which both Mideast Market and STLHalal could present their side of the story to the public. STLHalal has not received a reply.
We assure our supporters that before taking each step we have consulted with both our local and national board and have treated each Establishment with respect and fairness.
